The
years 1946-1970 included the height of the cold war. The
United States feared nuclear attack from the Soviet Union, but
had no way of physically stopping incoming aircraft and
missiles. This resulted in the "deterrent
concept." It essentially maintained that if "We
can't stop you, but we can make you damned sorry that you
attacked." The Strategic Air Command maintained
enormous fleets of intercontinental bombers, ones prepared to
bomb the Soviet Union. In this section, we've included
it's bombers. The Great Aircraft of this period are shown
below, all in the same scale so you can get an idea of their
